Response to unitary announcement

Cllr Brian Watkins

Cllr Brian Watkins, Norwich Liberal Democrat Group Leader, responds to today's decision by Local Government Minister Rosie Winterton to create a unitary council in Norwich.

Cllr Watkins said:

"This is a historic day for the city. This announcement recognises the unique importance of Norwich as an economic and cultural hub. If the plans are passed, it will mean that all key local decisions on issues like education and transport in Norwich will be taken by the elected representatives of the city. A new council will end the duplication of services in the city, improve democratic accountability and save the taxpayer money. It will finally end the discrepancy whereby Norwich was the biggest city in England without unitary status."

"We are aware that this decision will not please all groups and we need to make a determined effort over the coming months to work together with the County Council and other local authorities to ensure that partnership working remains strong and the transition is smooth. We have been given the opportunity to push forward and create a strong, efficient and modern council; it is an opportunity we must now grasp."

The proposals for Norwich will now be voted on by Parliament before they become law. If Parliament approves the proposals, the affected councils can start putting in place transitional arrangements ready for elections to the new councils in 2011.
