Lib Dem proposals to cut excess packaging are to be unveiled at the Liberal Democrat conference next week. Local Lib Dem councillor and Waste Management Working Party member, Rosalind Wright will be attending the conference and supporting the plans.

She said:"The Liberal Democrats feel that current government legislation on excess packaging is not working. At the moment, success in this area relies strongly on voluntary agreements and there is little motivation for stores or companies to change their ways. We are calling for legislation that will oblige large supermarkets to provide waste points for the dumping of excess packaging. We want deposit schemes for plastic bags and binding packaging reduction targets. We also want to see greater encouragement for community initiatives aimed at tackling packaging waste."

Rosalind hopes to speak in the debate, which takes place at 9.00am on Wednesday 19th September. "I will stress the benefit that these measures could bring to Norwich," she says, "not only in reducing overall waste levels, but also in relieving the pressure on individuals, who often feel they are shouldering the lion's share of the waste reduction burden. I look forward to the debate."
