Liberal Democrat Councillors at City Hall have criticised Labour's plans for cuts to services in Norwich.
The Labour administration recently announced that, after public consultation, they would be cutting and making changes to frontline services in the City - with some public toilets set to close, cutting of grass verges scaled back, tree planting suspended, higher charges for burials and allotments, and plans to charge residents for replacement bins.
The recommendations and the consultation results were approved by the Labour Cabinet yesterday.
Cllr Judith Lubbock, Liberal Democrat Group Leader on Norwich City Council, hit out at the plans:
"Liberal Democrats at City Hall have consistently said that rather than hitting frontline services the Council should be saving money by cutting the overall salary of the senior management team (currently over £600,000), reducing the £1.4 million bill for private consultants, reducing the £400,000 a year 'communications' budget, and sharing back office services with other local councils. These areas need to be looked at before we begin closing public toilets or charging people more to bury their dead.
"The council's consultation was, as we had always feared, a sham. The results clearly show that residents are against having to pay for replacement bins, against an increase in burial charges, and against cuts in the tree budget. Nevertheless, Labour are doing these things anyway. It rather begs the question: what was the point of the consultation in the first place?"
The Lib Dems have set-up up their own Consult Norwich website consultation, which they have extended until the budget is set next February, it can be found here: www.consultnorwich.com
