Petition raises concerns over cashiers' closure

December 2, 2010 4:53 PM

Another Labour cut.A petition raising concerns over the closure of the Cashiers' Service at City Hall was presented to Norwich City Council this week. The petition, which has been signed by over 200 people so far, was organised by Liberal Democrat Mile Cross Campaigner, Carl Mayhew.

"I have been approached by a number of residents worried about the closure of this vital frontline service. Since starting the petition the public response has been breathtaking. People, especially the elderly and vulnerable, are concerned that the City Council is closing this popular service without putting in place adequate alternatives or giving those alternatives time to bed-in." said Carl.

Under the plans, which will mean no cash payments will be taken at City Hall from the New Year, residents have been encouraged to use alternative payments; however, figures show that over 4,000 cash and cheque transactions are still taking place at the cashiers' desk every month and that at least 389 council tax/rent customers do not have any alternative method of payment in place.

"I am concerned that come January vulnerable customers, or those genuinely unable to pay by any other means, will go to City Hall to pay and will not be able to. This could lead to the ridiculous situation where these people are then chased for unpaid bills. I am therefore calling on the Council to keep open a limited cashiers' function for the moment in order that they can still receive cash and cheque payments." added Carl.

Text of the petition: We the undersigned are concerned about the closure of the cashiers' desk at City Hall and request the council investigate continuing the service.
