Call for tenants 'hotline'
The Liberal Democrat Councillors on Norwich City Council are calling for a tenants 'hotline' to be set up to allow tenants to give their housing concerns directly to the Board who will oversee improvements to the Housing Services, currently rated at 'zero' by the Audit Commission.
Following the 'zero' rating from the Audit Office of the council's housing services and the establishment of a Housing Improvement Board it is important that the tenants know where they can report issues which they believe need improving and which are troubling them. This will go some way to restoring the public's confidence in the council to learn from mistakes and make improvements.
Cllr Judith Lubbock commented "Whilst councillors and tenants associations are two ways that tenants can feed into the Housing Improvement Programme I feel it is important for tenants to know where they can go with their concerns, directly to the Board. I have already begun to receive a number of complaints about the service which I will take forward but it would be a very good exercise to establish a direct 'line to the Board. Tenants views are vitally important if the council is to improve on the current poor services."
In addition Liberal Democrat City Councillor Judith Lubbock said she was concerned about the lack of democratic accountability of the Board. "The Liberal Democrats have concerns with the setting up of the Housing Improvement Board as there are no opposition councillors on the board and this is undemocratic. We are also concerned that minutes of the meetings may not be available to the councillors and so it would mean keeping elected members in the dark."
