In a letter to the Norwich Evening News Judith Lubbock, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Eaton, encourages Norwich residents to respond positively to the consultation on introducing 20mph speed limits in 3 residential areas of the city.
Dear Editor,
Norwich City Council are consulting on the introduction of 20 mph limits in
3 residential areas of the city.
It is proposed to reduce speeds by the use of signs and an emphasis on education and enforcement - not physical traffic calming such as humps in the road which costs the taxpayers millions.
The 3 areas in the first phase are Vauxhall/Newmarket Street, Borrowdale Drive and Jex Road. Hopefully to be followed by a city wide approach to reducing traffic speeds to 20 mph lowering the risk and severity of accidents, making the streets safer for everyone but especially those much vulnerable such as the elderly, disabled, children and cyclists.
This was a Liberal Democrat initiative first proposed back in 2006 and I would urge a positive response to the consultation to ensure that the council follows through with this innovative way of making the car less dominant in our residential streets, giving more opportunities for walking and cycling and making us all a little more healthier and happier as well.
To respond to the consultation email 20mph@norwich.gov.uk or write to Norwich City Council at Transportation Department City Hall, NR1 2NH or to find out more contact the council's call centre on 0844 980 3333.
Yours sincerely,
Liberal Democrat Councillor Judith Lubbock
