Lib Dems continue push for cycle hire scheme

October 13, 2008 10:34 AM

Bike Hire SchemeOYBikes are coming to Norwich City Hall on October 14th at 5.30pm to demonstrate how a cycle hire scheme could work in the city. The demonstration will take place in the Council Chamber and all are welcome to attend.

The City Council Liberal Democrats believe that more should be done to encourage walking and cycling in the city in line with the Council's Environmental Strategy published this week. Latest figures (2007) show that the number of cycles crossing the Inner Ring Road in the city is increasing year on year and the proportion of cycles to motor vehicles is 9.2%.

City Councillor Judith Lubbock said "We should be building on these figures and finding new ways to encourage more cycling. It is a good way to get about in the city, it keeps you fit both physically and mentally and it is cheap. In the long term I would like to see cycle hire points at the Railway Station, the Bus Station, the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital, the UEA, City College and the Park & Ride sites. However I am hopeful that Norwich City Council working with sponsors could make a start with just 2 or 3 sites next year."

"We hope that those with responsibility for 'Travel to Work Plans' will take this opportunity to see what a cycle hire scheme could mean for their employees, students or customers. However, anyone with an interest in the subject is welcome to attend."

Andy Dawson of OYBikes added "Making public transport accessible to everyone is about providing choices across an integrated network. Cycle Hire systems are the final piece in that jigsaw - and offer a truly sustainable and fun way to get around the city."
