The fight to save Post Offices in Norwich will continue this week as a question will be asked by the Liberal Democrats urging the City Council to take action to stop threatened closures.
A briefing by the independent watchdog Postwatch claims that as many as 6 post offices could be closed in Norwich. Nationally the government has announced that Post Office Ltd will close 2,500 post offices across the country. The closure programme is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2008. This will leave a post office network of approximately 11,800 post offices once the closure programme is finished and will leave many rural and urban areas without an easily accessible post office.
Liberal Democrat City Councillor for Thorpe Hamlet Jill Surridge says:
"I am concerned that any closures would affect the most vulnerable, the elderly and the disabled and we need to do all we can to make sure they have access to a post office".
The move continues the work by the Norwich City Council Liberal Democrat Group and the party nationally to protect post offices. The party has highlighted the record of the Labour government, which has already closed 4,000 post offices and has plans to close at least 2,500 more. The Lib Dems have promised to invest £2 billion in the post office network, would return government services to the post office and would introduce a legal requirement for the government to maintain the local post office network.
The question at Council will call upon the Labour controlled City Council to represent the concerns people have and to formulate a strong and sustained case against the closures.
