Promote Norwich as 'Walking City', says Judith Lubbock

Cllr Judith Lubbock wants the Council to make use of its new link to 'Living Streets'
Liberal Democrats on Norwich City Council want to see Norwich promoted as a 'Walking City', and are asking the Executive Member for Environmental Impact and Transport to take up the initiative.
Cllr Judith Lubbock, Liberal Democrat shadow portfolio holder will be pressing the Labour Executive on the subject at Tuesday's full Council meeting.
She says "I am passionate about promoting Norwich as a walking city. I both
walk and cycle in the city and see the many benefits which come from doing
both - benefits to the individual and benefits to the community. I believe
the Council should be doing much more to be promoting the City for
pedestrians and cyclists."
"With Norwich's very own Mike Loveday now Chair of Living Streets it would
be great to host a conference and focus on Norwich as a walking city. It is
very much in line with the Liberal Democrat initiative to implement a 20 mph
speed limit in all residential streets. That is now part of the council's
service plans, so will be investigated this year."

With the appointment of Mike Loveday as the new Chair of Living Streets, the
Liberal Democrats would like to encourage this Council's Executive to use
Mike's position and the expertise of Living Streets to promote Norwich as a
'Walking City'.
Living Streets is the new name for the Pedestrian Association
Living Streets promotes improved walking environments - improved walking
environments encourages more people to walk, promotes health, improves the
local environment with less traffic and less accidents, and can encourage a
greater sense of community.
The promotion of the City as a Walking City would very much compliment the
'20 mph speed limit in residential streets' this council has already agreed.
Much has been achieved in Norwich, particularly during the Liberal Democrat
administration 2002- 2006, with improved pedestrian areas and public spaces
through European initiatives such as Water Cities, Spacial Metro and the
Civitas Project. The Liberal Democrats want to build on what has been
achieved and promote Norwich as a Walking City. Will the Executive respond
to this initiative?
