In a letter to the Evening News, James Wright, Liberal Democrat candidate in University Ward for the City Council elections, has called for Labour city councillors to be responsible in their dealing with City Care.
He writes: "Labour Councillor Bert Bremner's soapbox (18/4 EN) about 'low standards' of CityCare's maintenance of Pippin Green and Russet Grove leads me to wonder who is responsible for this contract? Labour have been in control at City Hall for the last year and were responsible for signing the 10 year contract with CityCare in 2000, and Labour Cllr Roy Blower is Executive Member with responsibility for CityCare. So if there are complaints surely Labour and their councillors should take responsibility and not pass the buck to previous administrations.
My successful intervention on behalf of the residents of Pippin Green and Russet Grove to clear up the litter has lead me to believe that practical, local action and reporting is far more effective than blaming others.
I recently heard of leaseholders who were pensioners being charged £156 by CityCare for painting a shed door.
I look forward to Labour Councillors responsing to this, or is it someone else's responsibility?" asked Mr Wright.
