Lib Dems propose 20mph limit for all residential areas

20mph is safer for residential streets, says Cllr Lubbock

Liberal Democrats propose 20 mph blanket speed limits on all residential streets in Norwich - that was the motion put forward at full council in June by the Liberal Democrats. It was supported by the other parties.

The Lib Dems believe that this is what the public want and they do not want to have to wait years to see it become a reality.

The current system of putting in place road humps and traffic calming to achieve a 20 mph limit in streets means that it is costly and therefore only a few streets a year can benefit from 20 mph limits.

The idea of a blanket 20 mph limit on ALL residential streets, without the associated traffic calming is currently being trialled by Portsmouth City Council, the first in the UK to do it.

Lib Dem Councillor Judith Lubbock who proposed the motion said "This move would improve pedestrian safety, encourage more walking and cycling and create a healthier environment for the community."

The next step is to gain support from the County Council and the police.

Cllr Lubbock has asked that the County Council look at the proposals and report back to the Joint Highways Committee.
